Notre Dame’s celebrated community wasn’t built overnight.
Notre Dame’s campus community was born out of the spirituality of the tradition of Holy Cross. Five core principles—mind, heart, zeal, family, and hope—define a Holy Cross education and ultimately shape student life on campus.
It took generations of involved students to create and sustain this special community. Now it’s your turn to carry the torch.
Residential Life at Notre Dame
Community building begins where you live.
Ask any Notre Dame undergraduate about his or her experience on campus and the story will usually start in the residence halls. It’s where they made lifelong friends, got plugged into the campus community, contributed to decades-old traditions and made a few new ones, and found out just how special it is to live under the dome.
This is no accident. From the University’s founding, residential life has been a central tenant of the Notre Dame experience, and is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the undergraduate experience at Notre Dame.
Undergraduate Residence Halls
One campus. One community. 32 homes.
Each and every one of our 32 undergraduate residence halls on campus has its own unique history, set of traditions, rector, chapel, mascot, colors, and signature event. While each one of our halls is indeed a world unto itself, collectively they combine to create a unified campus community that is unlike any other in the country, in large part thanks to our single-sex, stay-hall model that builds Christian community.
Whether you’re a Keenan Hall Knight, one of Farley Hall’s Finest, or part of O’Neill Hall’s Angry Mob, you have the opportunity to contribute your personality and talents to your hall’s distinctive identity, and in turn, continue Notre Dame’s legendary residential life tradition.
Graduate Student Life

Office of Community Standards
We’re all in this together.
Together, we can create a safe and vibrant campus community. In order to do so, every Notre Dame student, faculty, and staff member should understand the community’s standards and expectations for student conduct.
We are proud of our expectations because we know that you and others around the world expect more of Notre Dame graduates. Therefore, we expect members of our community to conduct themselves with integrity and reflect the values of an institution that believes deeply in the education of the mind and the heart – allowing you and our community to flourish.
