Sister Jean Lenz

When she died on January 21, Sister Jean Lenz consummated a career and a life which profoundly shaped – and were shaped by – the Notre Dame family she loved so much. Her 38 years as a teacher, residence hall rector, and University administrator insure that what has been said of other great people in Notre Dame’s history will also be said of her: Her blood is in the very bricks of the place.
Sister Jean now enjoys a perfect and barely imaginable intimacy with the Lord she so conspicuously served, revered and longed for, and we can only rejoice in that. But we may be forgiven for remembering and missing the company of a woman who was, according to our various associations with her, a welcome companion, an older sister, a wise mentor, a gentle critic, an encouraging ally, a surrogate parent, but always Notre Dame’s dear daughter.
That is why we loved her.
That is why we love her still.
