Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C. Leadership Award

Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., born in Laigné-en-Belin, France, in 1799, was ordained a priest in 1821 in the diocese of LeMans.  A seminary professor of philosophy and theology, he was founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the religious community which founded the University of Notre Dame and continues to serve and lead it.   Moreau promoted education as “the art of helping young people to completeness,” with the goal of preparing “useful citizens for society” as well as “citizens for heaven.”  He was beatified by the Holy See in 2007.  The Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., Leadership Award honors a graduating senior at Notre Dame who embodies Fr. Moreau’s vision of educating both the heart and mind, and who has demonstrated significant effort to advance the Catholic character of the University.
